Photographing nudes: what’s it like?

Posted on Oct 14, 2010 in Art | 0 comments

One of the questions that comes up pretty often is “Julie?  What’s it like to photograph nudes?”.  I never have the right answer to that question.  What’s it like?  Well, it’s a bit nerve-wracking, to be honest.  I always feel a bit nervous at first because I want to make sure that I am doing a good job.  I have no training in photography and have barely taken the time to educated myself on how to use a camera properly.  I know the basics and have just gone with it.  But I would never give myself the title of “photographer”. So, what’s...

101 in 1001: Letting someone photograph me…

Posted on Sep 28, 2010 in Art | 0 comments

This is one 101 goal that I knew I wouldn’t be able to plan ahead of time.  I hate being photographed.  Absolutely hate it.  So while photographing Annie Lefebvre in Toronto this past weekend, I was trying to explain to her what it’s like to be behind the lens.  After struggling with finding the right words, I just handed over the camera to her.  “Here, just take photos of me.  You’ll see what I mean”.  So, she did.  And it was her first time photographing someone.  A weekend of firsts.  The experience was… ugh.  I didn’t let her get a...

…of the day: a monologue about love

Posted on Sep 19, 2010 in ... of the day, Art | 4 comments

I recently met Kel Morin-Parsons, an Ottawa-based actor, writer and academic.  Kel sent me a link to some of the videos that she’d made and posted to Youtube.  They’re not professionally produced – monologues filmed in the moment without any attention paid to production quality.  It doesn’t matter because in this case, the video I’m sharing with you is brilliant.  You see, I’ve recently taken the attitude that I am not interested in looking for love; I’m not interested in seeking out a relationship.  That’s a bizarre concept to a lot of...

Beautiful people, the beautiful people

I love artists. I love the creative types more than I love the ocean, chocolate and wine. I love the creative types who CREATE. In this society, creating is brave. It can be risky, it can be terrifying. But it is the prime example of authenticity – the act of living your passion. It is envied, it is frowned upon. I’d love to say that authenticity is encouraged, but it’s just not popular enough. Sadly, there’s just nothing mainstream about living honestly and artists fall into that rare category of people who reject what everyone else expects of them. Any...

The Tiger and The Snow

Oh love… One of my most favourite films about love is The Tiger and The Snow. I won’t say more. Just read these quotes from the film. “If she dies, they can close this whole show of a world, they can cart it off, unscrew thew stars, roll up the sky and put it on a truck, they can turn off this sunlight i love so much. You know why i love it so much? Because i love her when the sun shines on her. They can take everything away, these carpets, columns, houses, sand, wind, frogs, ripe watermelons, hail, seven in the evening, May, June, July, basil, bees, the sea,...

…of the day: I’m on Flickr!

Posted on Jul 30, 2010 in ... of the day, Art | 4 comments

I never thought I’d actually use Flickr but I decided to hop on the bandwagon.. but only because it’s the most popular option at this point. But how or why it has become this popular is really beyond my understanding. It’s not user friendly at all! Anyway, I was hoping to find a blog-friendly app to use to embed in this post but I wasn’t able to find one in less than 20 minutes. So, here are a few recent photos that you’ll find on my Flickr page. As soon as I can, I’ll add a Flickr widget or something so you can see updated images here and there on the...
