How I used my life experience to win a marketing contest

On Friday night, I watched old episodes of TVO’s The Agenda.  One episode in particular called “The Limits of Economics“, amused me because the host, Steve Paikan, asked a group of (academic) economists to define “economics”.  Predictably, they couldn’t come up with a unanimous definition for their field of study, likely because economics is broken into several other fields, classical and more modern branches like behavioural economics, it’s so complex!  However, one thing they could all mostly agree on is that in any economic study or prediction...

The Age of Gadgetry

“I must have it”.  Whenever I hear this, I always wonder what it is that the person has to have and most of the time, it’s some sort of gadget.  Often, it’s a gadget made by Apple.  I saw a great quote today about utility and luxury and that Apple products mostly exist as luxury items (Dell exists for utilitarian purposes!).  I also read that the new Apple iPad is likely going to kill off the Kindle. Esclaves du luxe, de l’apparence du luxe, de l’apparence de...

I fell in love with ING Direct about three or fours years ago.  After seeing their commercials and reading up on them, I decided to try out their ISA (Investment Savings Account).  I signed up and then called their customer service line with a few questions.  The person I spoke with was so great that I asked to speak with his manager so that I could tell him how impressed I was. Today, while reading some financial blogs, I saw an interview with a blogger and the CEO of ING Direct Canada.  The video itself was informative but nothing too impressive (everyone wants to know if their next...

It’s not about the money, it’s about freedom.

A friend of mine joined me for dinner last night.  We spoke about a few ideas that I’ve been having while I’ve been ill (this blog was one of them). That’s what we do when we’re sick, isn’t it?   We have what seems to be an infinite amount of time to think.  While I had the flu from hell, I could only read a few pages of a book here and there.  I certainly couldn’t play video games and I had a hard time staying up to finish an entire film.  So I spent the majority of my sick time watching episodes of Six Feet Under and thinking.  Meanwhile, my...
