…of the day: Where Art Thou Wisdom?

Posted on May 2, 2011 in ... of the day, Work | 0 comments

I couldn’t sleep the other night so I loaded up my TED iPad app and watched a talk on our loss of wisdom. It was so good that I just had to share it with everyone. It’s Election Day in Canada today and the timing couldn’t be better to post a talk on the subject of virtue and wisdom and being reasonable. Have you noticed that sometimes, dumb rules are made? Like the ones where if one person does something wrong, everyone is suddenly not allowed to do something, or a sudden ban is instituted that’s imposed on everyone? It happens a lot in most workplaces but...

What to do, what to do!

Living life in the fast lane for the past little while has meant that I’ve had to set some things aside.  It’s funny because I went from doing barely anything because I was sick last year to then wanting to do everything at once!  I had a certain urgency inside of me – a roaring need to live boldly, a desire to accomplish the things I was too scared or too lazy to attempt beforehand. And now?  I am juggling twelve clients, a full-time job, three personal non-profit projects and a tiny social life.  Mostly, I spend a lot of time alone at home… to decompress.  I...

The highs and lows of 2010

Posted on Dec 30, 2010 in Health, Simple Life, Work | 4 comments

I’ve spent the past few days drafting up a blog article about my take on 2010.  I haven’t been able to write the perfect blog post about it yet.  Draft after draft after draft… and wondering if I should even write about it at all.  I should.  It’s the best way to move on. I think that one of the reasons why it’s so hard to write about this past year is because it was so… bizarre.  It was the most monumental year of my life so far.  I can’t remember a time when I suffered so much AND celebrated so much success all in one year.  There’s...

Your degree is worthless

Ouch.  I’m going to piss off a lot of academics with this post.  But I have to write it – it’s been brewing inside of me for far too long.  I’m writing for the students.  I’m writing for the kids these days who keep on saying “why am I doing this again?”.  I’m writing it for the job applicants, degree-holders who moan that they can’t find work, “but I have a degree!”.  I’m writing to the professors who are so disconnected with the real world that they actually think that students are in school for an...

Wish you were here

Posted on Sep 12, 2010 in Simple Life, Work | 0 comments

I have decided to build my life around those words “wish you were here”.  I don’t travel much.  I’ve never had the urge to go from city to city, country to country.  I’ve just always had the urge to slowly explore; to sit on a park bench and watch the locals interact with one another.  I want to taste the local cuisine and then have one of them teach me how to cook it.  I want to find spots where I can be alone – where I can just lean against a really old tree or sit in the door frame of a castle for a while.  Most of all, I want to send postcards to...

Lessons learned from unemployment

Posted on Aug 8, 2010 in Simple Life, Work | 6 comments

Late one evening in June, after a huge workout, a large meal and one heck of an awesome day spent with my sister, I was packing up my stuff to head home to crash for the night.  Work had been insanely busy due to a project that involved some major tax changes and I needed a good night’s sleep to make sure I’d be in good shape to work on that in the morning.  And that’s when I checked my Blackberry and saw a message from the company CEO.  I’d just been laid off by email. I didn’t have a job to go to in the morning. I’ve never been unemployed unless I...
