Money and ideas: where do you draw the line?

I just finished watching the documentary film, “Graphic Sexual Nature”.  It’s a film about a website called insex.com and it featured images and videos of bondage scenes.  Viewers paid a fee to become members and they could interact with the shows through live chat (the episodes were filmed and streamed live).  But this wasn’t your typical bondage website – it was hardcore bondage, probably the ‘best of the worst’ in terms of horror and torture.  And it was one guy in charge of it all – Brent Scott, a former Carnegie Mellon professor. Photographing nudes: what’s it like?

Posted on Oct 14, 2010 in Art | 0 comments

One of the questions that comes up pretty often is “Julie?  What’s it like to photograph nudes?”.  I never have the right answer to that question.  What’s it like?  Well, it’s a bit nerve-wracking, to be honest.  I always feel a bit nervous at first because I want to make sure that I am doing a good job.  I have no training in photography and have barely taken the time to educated myself on how to use a camera properly.  I know the basics and have just gone with it.  But I would never give myself the title of “photographer”. I love artists. I love the creative types more than I love the ocean, chocolate and wine. I love the creative types who CREATE. In this society, creating is brave. It can be risky, it can be terrifying. But it is the prime example of authenticity – the act of living your passion. It is envied, it is frowned upon. I’d love to say that authenticity is encouraged, but it’s just not popular enough. Sadly, there’s just nothing mainstream about living honestly and artists fall into that rare category of people who reject what everyone else expects of them. Any...

101 in 1001: the July round-up

Posted on Aug 10, 2010 in Misc | 2 comments

Oh July.  July turned out to be a month of transition.  A month where I found myself still in a panic from having lost my job to finding equilibrium and beauty again.  By mid-July, I’d learned to move on and to do it slowly.  I started thinking about starting my own side business and even now, that’s still in the works and it’s super exciting.  It’s one of those things that I’ve always wanted to do but was always scared of doing.  And by owning a business, it will allow me to apply all of the lessons I’ve learned about things not to do in business but...
