Once upon a scattered brain…

What will I write about today? There’s been no shortage of interesting events in my life.  I’ve read a lot of interesting articles, too.  I could talk about them, but I don’t feel like it. Instead, I’d rather tell you that the one thing that’s constantly on my mind nowadays is “don’t get laid off”.  Isn’t that stupid?  I remember when I first got laid off from my previous job earlier this year, I spoke to veterans in the IT industry and they’d smile and say “oh don’t worry, you get used to it”.  It’s the...

Money and ideas: where do you draw the line?

I just finished watching the documentary film, “Graphic Sexual Nature”.  It’s a film about a website called insex.com and it featured images and videos of bondage scenes.  Viewers paid a fee to become members and they could interact with the shows through live chat (the episodes were filmed and streamed live).  But this wasn’t your typical bondage website – it was hardcore bondage, probably the ‘best of the worst’ in terms of horror and torture.  And it was one guy in charge of it all – Brent Scott, a former Carnegie Mellon professor. Dude, I don’t work for free

My high school art teacher once told me, “Julie, never work for free.  Never, ever do unpaid work.”  When I asked her why, she said that eventually, people would either take advantage of my work or take my contributions for granted.  It’s one of the most...

It’s time to give away another book and since it’s non-fiction month, I thought I’d give away a book that might interest a lot of people: “Your Money or Your Life“. Forbes recently published an article entitled ‘Your Job in 2020′ and it’s pretty scary.  Though I don’t think that automation will move as quickly as predicted in this article, I do know that more and more white collar workers are worried about whether or not they can look forward to being employed for the next thirty, forty or fifty years.  Job security has always been a...

The Emergency Fund Revolution

I haven’t always been wise with money and I still occasionally get side-tracked and make a few minor mistakes that serve as a reminder to be smart about how I manage my dollars and cents! While reading “Le Zahir” on the Greyhound ride from Sudbury to Ottawa this week, there’s a passage about freedom that made me nod my head in recognition of the heavy truth associated with the narrator’s thoughts:    “J’entendais les gens parler au nom de la liberté (…). Esclaves du luxe, de l’apparence du luxe, de l’apparence de...
