…of the day: introducing Abd Al Malik

I might have posted a video of this man before but I thought he deserved his own post.  I’ve been listening to his rap for over a year now and I’m a huge fan.  I love how he presents his songs – he has a calm voice, a confident voice.  He’s a gifted performer, both as a rapper and as a spoken word artist. His stories are interesting, compelling, the rhymes and rhythms are HOT and the poetry is intelligent… he shouldn’t be copied but he should be studied by spoken word artists, slam poets and rappers alike. Abd Al Malik demonstrates slam poetry (in...

…of the day: introducing you to fado

Fado. Oh, Fado. I was introduced to portuguese fado by my friend, the Portugese artist Paula Rosa.  In fact, I think the first song she introduced me to was Cancao do Mar, performed by Dulce Pontes: Anyway, after seeing this video, I remember staring intensely at my monitor.  I was silent for a few minutes and then I got a rush of some sort, you know, the kind you get when you’re faced with so much beauty that it’s overwhelmed you completely.  I wanted more so she sent me more song recommendations and after a while, I’d become very familiar with the genre.  I...

Amadou & Mariam – Sabali   Amadou & Mariam – Je pense à toi Marina & The Diamonds – Numb Martha Argerich plays Liszt Piano Concerto No 1 in E flat Abd Al Malik...

This week, I happened to find a song in my playlist that I discovered a few months ago. It reminds me so much of my youth as a young girl who happened to be very stubborn and defiant!  But it also reminds me of all of the people I’ve met along the way – the taxi drivers, the homeless guys, the street musicians and random people I’d meet at coffee shops.  And every time I reflect on those meetings, I realize that these are moments that I remember with full clarity because I learned something from them.  In the past three weeks, I met two cab drivers that I will always...

Tonight feels like a Yann Tiersen song

Posted on Feb 24, 2010 in Art | 0 comments

.. tonight. tonight feels like a yann tiersen song.  it’s like if the accordion is pulling me into the land of dreams and the piano is saying just stay up a little while longer.  and then the violin shows up on a screeching note just to get the attention.  and a pause in the song takes the shape of a snowflake that has come to rest just outside my window. a snowflake that holds its breath for a moment, long enough for me to cherish it.  long enough for me to look at it with amazement and think ‘stay. stay a while longer’.  and then it exhales and melts away and...
