I am not a photographer, but…
“Hey Julie, what aperture do you have it set to?” asks my photographer friend. “Aperture? What’s that?”, I reply. “Julie doesn’t know any of those things – she’s just an artist with a camera”, I hear in the background from another photographer friend. Sigh. It’s so embarrassing. Here’s the context: I got invited to a big photoshoot at an old paper mill just outside of Montreal, where many photographers gathered to shoot models in this unique location. I planned ideas and managed to secure the participation of two...

One of the questions that comes up pretty often is “Julie? What’s it like to photograph nudes?”. I never have the right answer to that question. What’s it like? Well, it’s a bit nerve-wracking, to be honest. I always feel a bit nervous at first because I want to make sure that I am doing a good job. I have no training in photography and have barely taken the time to educated myself on how to use a camera properly. I know the basics and have just gone with it. But I would never give myself the title of “photographer”. So, what’s...

This is one 101 goal that I knew I wouldn’t be able to plan ahead of time. I hate being photographed. Absolutely hate it. So while photographing Annie Lefebvre in Toronto this past weekend, I was trying to explain to her what it’s like to be behind the lens. After struggling with finding the right words, I just handed over the camera to her. “Here, just take photos of me. You’ll see what I mean”. So, she did. And it was her first time photographing someone. A weekend of firsts. The experience was… ugh. I didn’t let her get a...

I never thought I’d actually use Flickr but I decided to hop on the bandwagon.. but only because it’s the most popular option at this point. But how or why it has become this popular is really beyond my understanding. It’s not user friendly at all! Anyway, I was hoping to find a blog-friendly app to use to embed in this post but I wasn’t able to find one in less than 20 minutes. So, here are a few recent photos that you’ll find on my Flickr page. As soon as I can, I’ll add a Flickr widget or something so you can see updated images here and there on the...
Read More…of the day: some news and photos
Let’s start with some site news: I now have a local installation of WordPress on my computer with server et al. This means that I’ll have the power to make changes to my site and more or less preview them before actually changing anything “live”. For a PHP newbie, this is going to be super helpful for me to learn how to add, remove or modify code (and test it) without risking a major code fail. My site looks sad at this moment. I am known to be creative but I am not a designer at all! I’d love to hire someone to just do it all for me but that would be too...
