The G20 protests: Police brutality or proper crowd control?

Posted on Jun 29, 2010 in Media, Politics | 2 comments

In my last article, I wrote about my thoughts on the kind of revolution I’d like to see in our society. One that simply makes it so that individuals become more interested in self-development and in minding their own business to become better people rather than concern themselves with things that really don’t matter much in the end. I also expressed that I don’t feel that protesting is a very effective method of invoking change, particularly in politics here in Canada. I just haven’t seen enough evidence to back up the notion that demonstrations are useful. However,...

Invasion of the gangsta babies: the FAQ

Posted on Mar 3, 2010 in Politics | 9 comments

I wrote an article a few days ago about an anti-gang campaign taking place in Sudbury.  Within 24 hours, my site traffic quadrupled and I received a great deal of feedback.  But it wasn’t my article that hit a nerve, it was the comments left by Norman Beauvais, who worked on the organizing committee for this campaign.  These comments were alarming coming from someone who not only worked on a committee affiliated with the police but also sat on a committee to prevent violence against women.  Read them here:  http://julielaurin.com/?p=820 But here’s what irks me the most about...

(Update: After receiving a lot of feedback on this article, I wrote a follow-up article here.) Oh Sudbury.  From the city that placed its memorial to battered women in a cemetary (I kid you not) comes the latest major gaffe by its police force: a gang awareness campaign that misses the mark, big time.  The province allocated 480,000$ to fight street gangs and educate young people about gangs and to prevent them from being lured by their appeal.   Apparently, according to the Sudbury police, there’s an increasing move from gangs from southern ontario into rural areas like Sudbury and...

…of the day: The voices of artists

Posted on Feb 5, 2010 in ... of the day, Art, Politics | 0 comments

Ever since the “war on terror” was declared by the U.S. after September 11th, I’ve been trying to find artwork and music and plays that have political slants to them.  Artists have always been our visionaries.  They’re the ones who can express themselves without worrying about what the boss has to say about it.  It’s that freedom that we all long for that artists have (and maybe that’s why they’re secretly envied by non-artists…).  So how are today’s artists expressing themselves in regards to current political events?  I’m not...
